Summer Assignment Fall of 2013
Dear Students,
Welcome to AP chemistry. I hope to have a fun and exciting year, but to be able to accomplish all of the required material prior to the AP exam you will be required to review material covered in chem I on your own. None of the this material should be new to you. This assignment is meant to refresh your memory of material already learned so that you will be ready to go on the first day of school. We will not spend class time reviewing this material. A quiz covering ions and nomenclature will be given on the second day of class and an exam covering all of this material will be given on the 3rd day of class.
Please purchase a lab book that has carbon copy capabilities. All labs will be completed in this book so that upon completion of the course you will have a portfolio of all of your lab work. Please also create a UT EID, if you do not already have one.
All of the material required for the summer assignment can be found on this website. Enjoy your break and see you in the fall.

What to review:
The following are the topics that need to be reviewed prior to the start of class. Accompanying handouts have been provided in case you need a brief refresher on the material. All of the material can be found in the Zumdahl notes.
- Polyatomic Ions and Variable Valence for Transition metals - Memorize them. There will be a quiz on the second day of class.
- Metric and American Conversions, Dimensional Analysis, and Significant Figures - you will be tested throughout the entire year on sig figs
- Dimensional Analysis
- Chemical Nomenclature - be able to write out both the name of the substance and provide a correct formula for the substance
- Reactions and Net Ionics - be able to write out a complete balanced reaction being given only the reactants. Be able to identify the type of reaction as single replacement, double replacement, synthesis, decomposition, or combustion. From the balanced equation be able to write a net ionic.
- Stoichiometry - whether you prefer to calculate your stoichiometric problem using dimensional analysis or the method outlined in the handout does not matter as long as you can correctly solve the problem with enough work shown to follow your thought process
- Be able to solve for percent composition, percent yield, and emperical/molecular formulas
- Be able to calculate molarity and molality
- Know how to prepare a solution from a stock solution and a from solid reagent
- Review the Zumdahl notes on gases
- Review the Zumdahl notes on solids and liquids. Be sure review IMFs, phase diagrams, and heating curves.
Lab: Gravimetric Analysis of M2CO3
Please be prepared to complete the following lab on the first day of class.
