Today’s educational system encourages creative thinking but does not give the students the opportunity for creativity. We, as educators dictate, what you will learn, how you will learn it, and how you will be assessed. You are solving problems that have already been solved not problems that need solving in today’s ever changing environment. This is an algorithmic approach to learning. While there is a need for this in the educational system, learning foundational concepts, it does not tend to higher level creative learning and autonomy and purpose in learning.
To achieve this we need to move to a heuristic method of learning. A chance to explore a problem on your own and develop a novel approach to solve it. We need to be providing you with the opportunity to think outside the box and begin to develop solutions to novel problems, whether they are right or wrong. We need to be giving you an opportunity to fail, in a controlled environment, and then look at the failure as a way to learn and grow. |
Why 20TimeAs educators we encourage creative thinking but we do not give you a true opportunity for authentic learning and research. We encourage students to think big, but often give huge constraints to projects and set limits, which in turn limits one's creativity and thinking. 20Time and the wicked problem project is hopefully an answer to this problem.
